Sunita Viswanath honoured, Indian-American woman with Champion of Change July 17, 2015



An Indian American woman is among 12 faith leaders to be honoured as "Champions of Change" by the White House for their efforts in protecting environment and communities from the effects of climate change. She is among the 12 other recipients who have been honoured with this award for their continuous efforts towards climate change. Sunita Viswanath, the only Indian American to figure in the list, has been selected for her work to encourage Hindus to take care of the environm US ent.  She is also co-founder and active board member of Women for Afghan Women (WAW), US based women`s human rights organisation.



Sunita was honoured for her work with Sadhana, US based organisation’s s Project Prithvi which encourages Hindus to take care of the environment. She is co-founder and board member of Sadhana: Coalition of Progressive Hindus. In 2011, she was awarded with the Feminist Majority Foundation`s Global Women`s Rights Award for her work with WAW. Sunita was born in Chennai, Tamil Nadu and has worked in women`s and human rights organisations for almost three decades.
